On the occasion of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Sant'Egidio unites with the celebrations that take place all over the world. In the first place that in Saint Peter's square with Pope Francis, in which also refugees that have come through the humanitarian corridors will participate.
We hope that the theme of migration will refrain from emotions and political propaganda and will concern itself with measures on the medium and long term, of which not only the migrants will benefit, but also the society that welcomes them. Like Pope Francis writes in his message for this World Day: "It is not only the cause of migrants that is at stake; it is not just about them, but about all of us, and about the present and future of the human family."
Facing a global and structural phenomenon, regular entry routes must be encouraged - like the humanitarian corridors, which have already brought more than 2.700 persons to Europe (of whom more than 2.000 to Italy). They counter illegitimate human traffickers and immediately start to welcome people on paths of integration and social inclusion. The question how to effectively help the young people from the countries from which emigration to the north originates to give them a future that is often denied to them, must also be addressed.
