Urgent Appeal by Marco Impagliazzo: “We call on the North of the world to help the victims of climate change in Africa.”

In Mozambique, Cyclone Idai has left hundreds of victims and thousands of displaced people behind. The situation is particularly critical in Beira, the most affected city, where everything is lacking, starting with drinking water and health care to treat those injured. The Community of Sant'Egidio has been present in the country since the end of the 1980s, has accompanied the country towards peace and contributed to its development with health projects (Dream for the care of AIDS patients) and for the registration of minors (with Bravo!). Sant’Egidio has already started to collect aid. Medicines, clothes and basic food supplies such as rice and flour are mostly needed, as well as machinery to remove rubble and start reconstruction.

The aid will be distributed through the widespread network of the numerous Sant'Egidio communities present throughout the country. Right in Beira many of the displaced people have taken refuge in the Community's Dream centre, where they are receiving first aid.
"From Italy and Europe we expect an urgent and generous response to the needs of this population that lacks everything - said the president of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo -. It is necessary to give a strong signal of solidarity towards a nation that is experiencing one of its most difficult moments since the end of civil war in 1992. Above all, the most fragile subjects are in danger: the elderly, the sick, people with disabilities and children. We appeal to the North of the world and to every citizen to respond generously, showing that we do not forget those who suffer from a tragedy caused by climate change that, for too long, has been denied an adequate and supportive response."
