A delegation of the Sant’Egidio Community met with Salva Kiir Mayardit President of the South Sudan, during his official visit in Rome at the Vatican. The President said his appreciation for the faithful commitment of Sant’Egidio towards the people of South Sudan, which started in 1994 long before the independence of the country (in 2011).
Moreover, the President described the Peace agreement signed in September 2018 as a positive and irreversible process that nevertheless faces difficult challenges. He therefore hoped for the continuous support of Sant'Egidio, which confirmed its commitment to work for Peace in the country.
The Community supports South Sudan in many different ways:
- support to dialogue between the conflicting parties
- supply of humanitarian aid
- implementation of Humanitarian Corridors for vulnerable families in refugee camps
- establishment of school for young refugees in the Nyumanzi refugee camp, Northern Uganda
