After the fire, probably caused by an electrical short circuit , that broke out yesterday in a camp in Lesbos, which caused the death of a woman and a child and left others wounded, the Community of Sant'Egidio expresses its sorrow and appeals to Europe to urgently deal with the situation of refugees staying in Lesbos, Samos and other Greek islands.
In Lesbos, where about 3.000 places for refugees were foreseen in the offical Moria camp, more than 12.000 people have arrived. They have been accomodated in difficult conditions (most of them under tents or in containers).
The Community, that has been present on the island this Summer with supportive actions (language courses, meals and various activities, particularly for youth), asks everyone not to forget this people of refugees, which is mostly composed of children and youth who have fled war or unbearable situations with their families. Many of them are from Afghanistan and Syria. The European Union has to take care of this unacceptable situation and needs to rapidly relocate these people who have been forced to wait so long to obtain an asylum status.
