#SaveTheDate On 28th and 30th November two major events in Rome for a world without the death penalty

#stand4humanity

On the 30th November 1786 the death penalty was abolished in a state for the first time - in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Since then, we have come a long way to liberate the world from the death penalty. But more can, and must, be done against this highly inhuman and useless measure, that does not work as deterrent and it decreases states to mere executors of injustice.

The Sant’Egidio Community is pursuing a global campaign to reach universal moratorium and calls upon all the 30th November at 6.00pm to a major event at the Colosseum in Rome.

Live events across hundreds of cities around the world will be running simultaneity on the same day. Over 2,000 cities are taking part in the “Cities for Life” Global Campaign and will illuminate their top monuments to say NO to the death penalty. A movement which now involves thousands of people across the world and made it possible, through a patient and collective commitment with the different governments, to decrease the number of countries mantaining the death penalty - starting from Africa, which in the near future, might be the second continent free from the death penalty.

Two days before, on 28th November in Rome, the 11th International Meeting of the Ministers of Justice for "A world without the death penalty” will take place in Rome - at the New Hall for the Parliamentary Groups of the Chamber of Deputies. This event is supported by the Sant’Egidio Community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Swiss Confederation and the International Fancophone Organization.
