Refugees: 25 Syrians arrived from Lebanon thanks to the humanitarian corridors of Sant'Egidio and Protestant Churches

25 Syrian refugees who have lived for a long time in the refugee camps in the Akkar region in northern Lebanon, in the Bekaa Valley or in precarious accommodation on the outskirts of Beirut, have landed this morning at Fiumicino on a flight from Beirut.

They entered Italy through the system of Humanitarian Corridors promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy and Tavola Valdese, in agreement with the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs. Since February 2016, 2544 people from Lebanon have reached safely our country. In total, about 6300 refugees have arrived in Europe with the Humanitarian Corridors.

The families will be accommodated in different Italian regions (Lazio, Calabria, Lombardy, Sicily, Veneto), partly thanks to their relatives, who arrived with earliear Humanitarian Corridors and have been able to integrate in our country, and partly in apartments provided by Italian families and associations. They will accompany the refugees along a path of integration, through learning the Italian language and, once refugee status has been obtained, integration into the world of work. The Humanitarian Corridors, entirely self-financed (from Sant'Egidio's fundraising and from the 8x mille of the Tavola Valdese) and realised thanks to a widespread reception network, represent a successful model, which combines solidarity and safety.
