On Wednesday, June 22, thirteen South Sudanese military personnel, which represent the government and the opposition, met Pope Francis during the general audience. They were accompanied by the representatives of the Community of Sant'Egidio, who have been leading the mediation process throughout the conflict. Moreover, the Community has organized in recent days a training course in Rome. The objective is to cooperate in the ceasefire monitoring mechanism. Specifically, Paolo Impagliazzo explains that “the inclusion of these groups is a necessary step to ensure the full compliance with the accord on Cessation of Hostilities. It is a way to bring peace to South Sudan."
