This year the winter in Kiev and throughout Ukraine has been particularly harsh. According to the official data of the municipality of Kiev, from the beginning of 2020 until today more than 40 homeless people have died because of the frost.
The Community of Sant'Egidio, denouncing this tragedy, asks local institutions to enact preparations in a more timely manner as to ensure protection from the cold for those who are poorest and have no shelter.
The Community, which has been helping the homeless for more than twenty years, in this period has organized a relief service every evening on the streets of the city. Each week it distributes 1,000 meals in different places. It has also been active in finding housing solutions for those who are homeless.
