South Sudan's President Salva Kiir said "I thank the Community of Sant'Egidio for its dialogue initiative in Rome." He announced today the formation of the government of national unity, in which the main opposition is leader Riek Machar who is now appointed as vice president. At the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, which was attended by a delegation from the Community, Kiir praised the negotiations held in Rome. In particular, the mediation enabled the inclusion of opposition forces that had not hitherto joined the peace process such as SSOMA leaders Thomas Cirillo, Paul Malong, and Pagan Amun. The president even stated "I want to congratulate them for signing the agreement on cessation of hostilities in Rome, and I wish them quick progress when it comes to the talks with the government delegation, which is led by Barnaba Marial Benjamin. We must use this moment to bring new life to our country through peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness." Kiir concluded by saying "We appreciate the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for his prayers and call for peace for South Sudan. Thanks to today’s important ceremony, we have certainly listened to him and we are proud to announce that we are finally reconciled."
