Isabel's new house and the joy of the last that shall be first: the revival of Beira

brick houses continue to be consigned to the poorest elderly, just a few months after cyclone Idai

It's the joy of seeing "the last" become "first" that unites many people in the images we've received from Beira in Mozambique, the country that was struck by cyclone Idai in March, which almost entirely destroyed the city. The youth of the Community of Sant'Egidio is building houses for the most vulnerable people, who were living in barracks with plated roofs. Among them, many elderly remained alone. Every time, the handover of the keys becomes a feast that unites the entire quarter. "The building site is nearly openend and before the end of the year we will have built fifty houses," they wrote on the social media of the Mozambican city.

The hands of those who are building these houses free of charge are supported by the dream to see Beira revive. Support comes from all over the world, also through Facebook, from the first days of the emergency when food aid and vaccinations to prevent an outbreak of cholera were distributed. Now, a major part of the efforts have been turned towards reconstruction.
