Kamiano, the soup kitchen in Antwerp (Belgium) is 25 years oldand, for this occasion, received the visit of Queen Mathilde. Welcomed by hundreds of people, volunteers, the elderly, migrants and homeless people, she lingered with them and listened to their testimonies about difficulties of life on the street, but also on the importance of receiving human support and friendship in order to find a new life path.
In all those years the soup kitchen has rapidly grown: at the beginning it was attended by a few dozen of poor people, today it has become a center serving 50,000 meals per year.
Other initiatives have also started from the soup kitchen, such as the “Laudato Si” project: the shop where second-hand clothes and stuff are recycled and where some homeless people, starting with a work placement, are now experiencing social reintegration.
Celebrations will continue on Saturday 8th June, with a barbecue open to all the homeless and their friends.
