A peace and reconciliation agreement was signed yesterday for the Central African Republic. An evocative ceremony took place in the presidential room at Khartoum in Sudan in which there were the President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, the President of the Republic of Sudan Omar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir, the President of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, and numerous dignitaries from diverse government and international organizations.
The Community of Sant’Egidio participated in the mediation together with the African Union, the UN, and the governments of the region including Sudan, which also hosted the negotiations for the whole duration.
During the signing ceremony, the President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, thanked the Community of Sant’Egidio for its commitment to peace in Central Africa.
Sant’Egidio expresses extreme joy for this important step towards peace and unity, with the hope that next months could progressively lead to the end of violence that affected every aspect of this country, and that the Central African population could recover from this conflict - ongoing since 2013.
