A large water tank has been built by the Community of Sant'Egidio in the prison of Niamey, which is the area where the "minors" (14-19 years old) are housed. This water tank aims to cope with the water shortage that has often caused problems with hygiene and health, by making detention even harder for the 90 boys. Thus, the director of the prison asserts that:
"since the water arrived, hospitalisations have decreased."
It was a beautiful and emotional ceremony, which was marked by the feeling of gratitude. In particular, the boys participated in the event with games and words of thanks by emphasizing in this way the valuable work of humanization that the Community is carrying out in many prisons. Moreover, Msgr. Ambroise Ouedraogo, who is the Bishop of Maradi, invited the young men to dream of a world without prisons along with Sant'Egidio. Indeed, he claims: "I would like that each of you, who lives in this house, to dream about getting out of here and being better. The inauguration of this water tank initiates the new life that I wish for all of you".
The Community of Sant'Egidio has been present in Niger alongside the poor and the prisoners for many years. It is a work that has been recognized by the government; thus, yesterday, in Rome, the administration formalized the collaboration through the signing of a Headquarters Agreement between the Republic of Niger and the Community of Sant'Egidio.
