“KEEP TALKING TO US ABOUT THE GOSPEL”: THE REQUEST OF THE INMATES AT KITGUM PRISON (NORTHERN UGANDA)

Kitgum, which is in the heart of northern Uganda, is located a few kilometers away from the border with South Sudan. During the civil war, the area was affected by violence. In addition to the thousands of deaths, the area was isolated from the world for several years.

The wounds of war are still many, but there is a generation that was born at the end of the war. Hence, this age group has never experienced a conflict. Specifically, a community of Sant'Egidio Youth for Peace was born thanks to these young individuals.

In this corner of Africa, these young people have been trying to sow the seeds of a peaceful life, especially with visits to the place where the burden of past violence is still strong, which is the prison.

Juveniles regularly see prisoners in Kitgum penitentiary. In particular, they visit many young people like them or mothers with their children. Furthermore, food aid and soap are distributed to the inmates in order to improve their living conditions.

Along with this crucial support, the presence of Sant'Egidio youth is also a factor that contributes to individuals’ culture and humanization. Thus, on Saturday, March 12, the Youth for Peace invited prisoners to pray for peace in every part of the world. For instance, a young detainee said "I felt my heart filled with the Holy Spirit when I lit the candle for peace in Syria. I have never thought I would pray for peace for another country". Moreover, a young mother said, "I have never forgiven, but from today I want to learn to forgive and ask to be forgiven". However, it is K.'s words that show the young people of Sant'Egidio the way forward: "Keep coming and tell us about the Gospel."
