In the Holy Week, Sant'Egidio commemorates all those Christians victims of persecution, discrimination and deprivation of religious freedom. Their names and stories will by recalled as witnesses of the Gospel because, as Pope Francis says: "Nowadays, in the 21st century, our Church is a Church of Martyrs".
There are many countries all over the world where bearing witness as unarmed and non-violent Christians represent a scandal in the face of violence, corruption and terror. There are places where people die because they go to Mass, where Churches and Christian schools are burned, where Christians are threatened, intimidated and even killed because they save youngsters from criminal gangs and teach them how to build up peace.
In Rome the Ecumenical Vigil Prayer took place 21st March 2019 in the Basilica of San Bartolomeo and was celebrated by Card. Vicar Angelo De Donatis. Find out more >>
