Friendship with prisoner is also a matter of bringing hope to those experiencing possibly the worst living condition in our society. The Community of Sant’Egidio in Malawi has a longlasting commitment with the imprisoned, and all its effort are aimed to cut off their feelings of abandonment and the lack of future prospect.
Recently, as a matter of promoting hygiene and sanitation in the Malua prison, Sant’Egidio has installed a brand new water tank to guarantee the constant water supply and helped the renovation of cells and rest rooms.
Moreover, the dedication to prisoners finds expression with a number of initiatives, such as:
- Civic education workshop: training to life after prison, reducing the number of re-offenders.
- Human Rights and Personal Hygiene education
- School eduction within the prison and support to examination fees - increasing the number of young inmates interested into studies.
