From April 18 to 20, 2018, a delegation of civil society and political figures from the Nineveh Plains, which are situated in the northern part of Iraq, met with the representatives of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Rome. The meeting aimed to reflect on the situation in the region, which has been affected by terrorist violence and the aftermath of the long Iraqi conflict. Specifically, the objective was to look for initiatives that can improve the situation and allow the return of that part of the population who had to leave their homes.
Participants at the conference thanked the Community of Sant'Egidio for its ongoing commitment to bringing peace to Iraq and its endeavors to help the weaker sections of the population. They also asked for the Community’s support for the reconstruction, cohabitation, and peace in the Nineveh Plains.
