The United Nations’ Special Envoy for Libya, Ghassan Salamé, has visited the Community of Sant'Egidio at the end of his stay in Italy. This is the first visit since his designation.
The person in charge of the Community’s International Relations, Mauro Garofalo, has also participated in the meeting. In particular, during the talks, the recent developments of the complicated Libyan scenario were analysed together with the initiatives for dialogue and stability, which have been undertaken by Sant'Egidio since the beginning of the crisis. In fact, the participants focused on the results of recent meetings between representatives of some of the areas where tensions are at their highest. For instance, the delegates of the two cities of Misurata and Zintan, in Tripolitania, and those of the Fezzan region, in the South of the country, joined these gatherings promoted by the Community.
The two delegations even addressed the issue of migrants and the concerns that have arisen in recent months, by highlighting that the pacification and unity of Libya are essential factors in combating human traffickers and managing the phenomenon along with the countries involved.
Ghassan Salamé, who has known Sant'Egidio for many years, expressed his appreciation for the work that has been done. He also hoped for an active collaboration to reach a final resolution to the Libyan crisis.
The heart of the meeting is also the initiatives for mediation, which are carried out by the Community in Tripolitania and Fezzan
