Easter also means the liberation of prisoners: it happened in Bukavu, which is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where on April 17, 11 boys (6 of them minors) were freed from the central prison thanks to the intervention of the Community of Sant'Egidio.
For a long time, the Community has been carrying out the fundamental work in Congo to raise awareness about the condition of prisons, which are overcrowded. There is even a lack of resources. In many cases, prisoners continue to be held in the penitentiary even after serving their sentence due to inadequate attention from lawyers and associations or insufficient economic requirements.
Once released, the young people were taken back to their families, with whom they were able to celebrate Easter.
