PEACE IN COLOMBIA: THE COMMUNITY OF SANT’EGIDIO WAS INVITED TO CARTAGENA FOR THE SIGNING OF THE AGREEMENT

"Great support for the negotiation process."

A delegation of the Community of Sant'Egidio is present in Cartagena for the signing of the Colombian peace accord. The letter, which aimed to invite the Community to participate, mentions the "great support" that has been offered by Sant'Egidio "since the beginning of the negotiation process" between the Colombian government and the FARC. Specifically, the bargaining mechanism culminated in the talks that were held in Cuba.

The Community expresses joy and great satisfaction for this historic agreement because it puts an end to a civil war that has caused 200,000 deaths and 5 million displaced persons. The accord reached for this amazing country, which is the third most populous one in Latin America, shows that "peace is always possible" even when the distance between the parties seems unbridgeable. Sant'Egidio, which for years has been facilitating the meetings and the dialogue between the conflicting parties in Colombia, will continue to support the reasons for coexistence in the future and will work for the full success of the agreement.
