How a “YES” culture can save a life

We celebrated yesterday the memory of Modesta, a woman who use to live in the streets of Rome. She died at 36 in the main city train station. The reason was a “NO”: no to help, no to a shelter, as she was to dirty and with lice.

36 years have been passed but we still want to treasure her memory. Sadly, to her name many others have followed. Up to 12 people living on the streets already died this year in Rome. It seems like there is no place for everyone in our cities. That is why we want to celebrate the memory of Modesta and of all those who died like her - starting with Sunday the 3rd of February in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, and then in many other places. We will name them one by one. Their memories must remain alive in the very consciousness of our cities.

This is how we want to foster a “YES” culture: yes to Hospitality, yes to Humanity, yes to cities where there is room for everyone.
A “YES” culture to draw a new geography, facts, places. As we have experienced recently, wherever we live, it is possible to convert houses, parishes, conference rooms into shelters for those with no place where to stay.

It is already a reality in Rome, Naples, Parma, Turin, Bologna and Novara. It's the geography of Hospitality, it's the “YES” culture: "I'm cold, is there room for me tonight?” - “Yes!".

This is what our Christian faith teaches us: If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, 'I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty,' without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? In the same way faith, if good deeds do not go with it, is quite dead.. (Gc 2, 15-17)
