Last Friday, as soon as the first snow appeared, a handful of text messages and phone calls focused on one thought: how can we help the homeless? Then, having taken what we had at home – broth, hot chocolate and tea – we decided to meet at the usual place. It was so cold we did not want to limit our “visits” only to our usual friends. We managed to get a car with the appropriate wheels for the snow to look for other people in the subways of Muro Torto (Rome city centre).
In one of them we found two trembling men, wrapped in pile blankets, the ones you get on the airplane. One of us talked to them, reassuring them; another gave them what we brought with us; an another called the Protezione Civile (Civil Protection). Together, we gave them a lift to one of the shelters set up for the emergency.
In Rome it started snowing again. This evening we are going to be more than last week, because we had time to collect blankets, sleeping bags and thermos flasks. And to buy snow chains for our cars...
